One of the most visited places just outside Munich Germany is the Dachau Concentration camp, and although worth a trip, it may be upsetting to children. Inside the camp there is a main exhibition hall, outside of which there is a monument inscribed with “Never Again” in English, French, German, Yiddish and Russian. The main hall shows photo’s of the various camps in Germany and Central Europe, as well as officers and prisoners and some of the harrowing ‘scientific experiments’ some of the Nazi doctors carried out.

MunichThere are also documents illustrating how the prisoners were identified by category (i.e. jews, homosexuals, Poles, etc.), the persecution of authors banned by the party, the rise of the Nazi’s and the formation of the concentration camps. Beside the main hall there are bunkers and a gas chamber (which was never used).

Radius Touristik offer 4 to 5 hours tours around the camp in English, while the Dachauer Forum and Action Reconciliation offers free tours in English Saturday and Sunday, and daily (except Monday) from June to August. It is advisable to join a tour so that you can appreciate and understand better the history surrounding the camp.
A second popular trip are the lake areas near Munich, such as Chiemsee an hour to the east of Munich and Starnberg to the south. Chiemsee has a natural beauty that draws residents of Munich and tourists alike to visit its shore and indeed the famous Schloss Herrenchiemsee (Herrenchiemsee Palace), who’s beauty is that of Versailles, if not more lavish. There are also many beaches and water sport facilities.

Stranberg, on the other hand is 30 minutes from Munich and a closer option for those who wish to leave behind the hustle and bustle of the city for some quiet time by the lake or more sight-seeing.
